From Troas, a number of Paul's companions went southward by ship. Paul himself went by land to Assos, a port along the Asia coast. There Paul boarded the ship to continue the journey to the south and east. |

Context: Assos was a port about 20 miles south of Troas. In the 4th century B.C., Aristotle stayed in Assos where he began work on his Politics. The Stoic philosopher Cleanthes was born at Assos (ca. 331 B.C.). The city boasted massive defensive walls. On its acropolis, which is shown above, was large temple to Athena that overlooked the sea below. |
