Ephesus: Harbor/Theater

Ephesus’ elegant theater could seat 24,000 people for plays, music, and religious ceremonies. It was also used for public meetings to deliberate issues, ratify actions of the city council, and issue decrees. According to Acts 19:23-41, devotees of the goddess Artemis staged an anti-Christian demonstration in the theater. The street at the right of the picture led to the waterfront. In that vicinity were warehouses and a bath-gymnasium complex.
