Mitylene

Acts
20:14-15

Boarding a ship at Assos, Paul sailed south to the port of Mitylene. After spending the night there, the ship continued its journey southward toward along the coast of Asia Minor as Paul returned toward Jerusalem.

Context: Mitylene is a port on the southern end of the island of Lesbos. The picture shows the island as seen from the mainland of Asia Minor. The city was built on an extension of land and had excellent harbors on either side. In the 5th century B.C. Mitylene was a naval power, but after a disastrous revolt against Athens its power was sharply diminished. In Roman times the city was an important commercial port and resort for well-to-do Romans.
