Caesarea was the center for Roman rule in Palestine. The Roman governor normally resided at Caesarea, going to Jerusalem only periodically. The inscription at the right bears the name of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor from A.D. 26-36. The Roman governor presided at trials and was responsible for tax collection. He also oversaw the Roman troops that were stationed in the city. |
