The Circus Maximus was the track used for chariot races. The contestants drove chariots with two, three, or four horses, as pictured here. Under the emperor Nero, the track was 600 yards long. It could hold 150,000 spectators. Later it was expanded to hold even more. Racing teams were identified by their colors (red, white, blue, green), each with devoted fans. The major contests took place in September, though other events were held throughout the year. |
