This monumental gate stands at one end of the
market place. It was built between 4 and 2 B.C. by two former slaves of
Augustus, who dedicated the gate to the
emperor and his family. An inscription on the gate calls Augustus
"son of the divine," since he was the adopted son of Julius
Caesar, who was deified by the Roman senate. The inscription also lists
offices that Augustus held, including that of high priest. Statues of the
Augustus and his family looked down upon those
passing through the gate.
