Ephesus: Gate

This monumental gate stands at one end of the market place. It was built between 4 and 2 B.C. by two former slaves of Augustus, who dedicated the gate to the emperor and his family. An inscription on the gate calls Augustus "son of the divine," since he was the adopted son of Julius Caesar, who was deified by the Roman senate. The inscription also lists offices that Augustus held, including that of high priest. Statues of the Augustus and his family looked down upon those passing through the gate.
