Stoning of Stephen

Paul approved when Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death in Jerusalem. Stephen's opponents placed their garments at Paul's feet when they did the stoning.
Context: Jewish sources prescribed stoning as a form of punishment for various offences. In cases of apostasy, the victim's accusers were to initiate the stoning, with the wider community joining in later (Deut 13:6-11; 17:7).
