Acts 7:58-8:1 |

Paul approved when Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death in Jerusalem. Stephen's opponents placed their garments at Paul's feet when they did the stoning. |

Context: Jewish sources prescribed stoning as a form of punishment for various offences. In cases of apostasy, the victim's accusers were to initiate the stoning, with the wider community joining in later (Deut 13:6-11; 17:7). |
