Summary
Bring a mug to Sunday’s coffee hour that represents one of your callings in the
world.
Purpose
To highlight the congregation’s work in the world in a relaxed and casual
atmosphere.
- Raise Awareness of the connections between
ordinary life and faith.
- Identify and recognize each person’s unique
Strengths and Abilities.
Audience
Regular coffee hour participants and
all those with mug collections.
Resources
Announce “Coffee Cup Sunday” in the church bulletin and/or newsletter inviting
folks to bring cups representing their daily callings in the world the following
week. Place tent cards on the tables with reflection questions such as those
found under References below.
Steps
- Publicize the event.
- Remind folks that calling,
and hence the mugs, can include more than just “work”. We have callings in
our homes, communities, congregations, and workplaces. Look for a wide
representation of “World’s Greatest. . .“ Mugs.
- Present the “coffee hour”
as a mixer. It is a safe place for folks who have enjoyed each other’s Sunday
presence for years to discover/rediscover their Monday-Saturday lives.
Tips
Recast the activity as “Dress Up
Sunday” and invite folks to wear uniform, name badge, etc. that represents their
daily calling. Again, urge folks not to simply collapse calling into work.
Jack Fortin, Executive Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at Luther
Seminary, likes to tell a story about a surgeon who came dressed in the uniform
of the Little League team he coached.

Sample reflection questions include:
- How did you first “hear”
your calling (work)?
- How do you experience
God’s presence in that place?
- What
opportunities/challenges are you now encountering?
