Congregational Pathway: Strengths & Abilities
back

Identify and recognize unique strengths and abilities. Discovery of our gifts happens best in Christian community as others name our uniqueness and affirm our callings.

Description
Help members to know that they were born with a unique pattern of strengths and abilities. Discovery of these strengths leads people to an understanding of how and where God has called them to serve in the world. The role of the congregation is to provide support and accountability, probably in small groups, that will encourage the discovery of each person’s strengths and affirm the value of each member’s gifts and calling.

Destination
What if every person in the congregation knew what they excelled at and were celebrated and valued for their work – both inside and outside the congregation? What if members could clearly see how their gifts were necessary to the health of the Body of Christ? What if each person’s strengths were valued equally through an appreciation of diversity, rather than a hierarchy of talents and abilities? What if the full power of the people of God was unleashed through knowledge of their “birthright gifts” and a clear sense of God’s call for their lives?

Detours
When the gifts and calls of all the people of God are not affirmed, the congregation is weakened. If members do not feel valued they are less likely to donate time, talent and abilities. Members can
become competitive, not cooperative and the church becomes susceptible to judgmental attitudes,
jealousy and misunderstandings. Members participate in the work of church out of guilt or obligation, rather than a desire to share their gifts.
