Internship Newsletter: September 2005

A Greeting from Randy Nelson

On behalf of all of those on the Contextual Leadership Initiative staff, I welcome you to what we hope will be an exciting year of growth and ministry. I am aware that this is the second year of a concurrent internship for some of you. Still others of you began anywhere from one to three months ago. Nevertheless, whether you feel like veterans or are just getting started, we look forward to working with you throughout the year ahead.

You are one of 103 internship teams engaged in ministry under the auspices of the CLI of PLTS and Luther. What happens this year is important not only for each of you and your host congregations and institutions, but also for the larger church. We are grateful for your participation and commitment to the program.

We invite you to stay in touch with your staff contact person throughout the year and to use us as resources in any way that may be helpful for you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Randy A. Nelson, Director
Contextual Leadership Initiative

What do I do now?
by Steve McKinley

After my first year of seminary my synod president (what we called bishops in medieval times) “gave” me a congregation all my own for the summer. For three months, I would be the “pastor” of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Oxford Junction, IA. I was a bachelor, and moved all I owned into the parsonage across the street from the church on a Monday. By evening I was all settled. I got up on Tuesday morning, showered, shaved, ate breakfast, put on slacks and a shirt and tie and sat down again at the kitchen table, since that would be my office for the summer. I took out a legal pad and a pen and prepared to write my “To-Do” list for the day.

Item 1: Study and prayer. Item 2: Sunday sermon. And then I was stuck. I couldn’t think of anything to write down. I was there to be the pastor, but I really didn’t know in any specific way what I was supposed to do.

I know more than one intern who has run into this same dilemma. You’re there to be the intern, you’re ready to start, but you don’t quite know what to do, and maybe your supervisor is the type of supervisor who is ready to let you figure this out for yourself. After a few hours, you start feeling guilty. A few suggestions:

  • Take heart. This is not a situation that will last long. In a couple months you will look back on these days nostalgically, and will be wondering how you can fit everything in to the day.
  • Ask your supervisor to suggest a few shut-ins for you to visit. There are always shut-ins to visit.
  • You’ve met a few members. Ask if you can visit them in their workplaces. That’s something that most pastors don’t have time to do, and it is a fabulous experience that will give you insight into the worlds people live in every day.
  • Practice ministry by walking around. If the Altar Guild is meeting, stop in and say hello. If some folks are painting a wall in a Sunday School classroom, have a cup of coffee with them. Volunteers stuffing the Sunday bulletin? They would be happy for another set of hands.
  • As a person whose most recent experience has been as a student, you will be tempted to spend a lot of time at your desk studying. Yield not to temptation! Of course you will spend some time keeping yourself mentally sharp. But don’t let the desk and office be a place to hole up and avoid people.
  • Have fun!

Intro to the Editor 101

My name is Steve McKinley, and I am the newest member of the CLI staff, the third deployed faculty person. I'll also be the editor of this newsletter for the year. I retired on July 31 after 38 years as a parish pastor, having served in New Haven and Windsor, CT; Auburn, MA; and Andover and Richfield, MN. The last eleven years were spent at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Richfield. A few things to know about me:

  • I am the husband of Pat, the father of Jill, Kirk and Meg, and the father-in-law of Angie.
  • I served for eight years on the Board of Directors at PLTS, the last four as chair.
  • For 26 years I wrote a column called “Pastor Loci” for “Lutheran Partners” magazine.
  • I’ve supervised a gaggle or more of interns and contextual ed students.
  • I loved, absolutely loved, being a parish pastor, and I thank God every day for showing her great sense of humor in calling a smart-mouthed kid from a more-or-less unchurched family into this fantastic life.
  • While I also love retirement, I envy interns who are getting launched on the ministry voyage. I think the church of today is much more interesting and exciting than the church I was ordained into all those years ago, and my mind staggers at the thought of what the church of the future will be.

I look forward to working with interns in the southern Twin Cities, southern Minnesota, and the Dakotas, and also look forward to getting acquainted with other interns and supervisors. I’m going to be editing this monthly newsletter, so if you’ve got some ideas, send them along!

Internship cluster events

Interns and supervisors will participate in cluster events throughout the internship year. Generally, your opportunities are once in the fall and once in the spring. The cluster is a chance for reconnecting with your colleagues and discussing ministry realities both challenging and celebrative. Please make every effort to attend your cluster event.

If the date for your cluster doesn’t work for you, please consider attending a cluster event that may work into your schedule better and is still located near you. Please notify the Contextual Leadership Initiative staff leading the cluster of your desire to attend a different cluster. Also RSVP to the CLI staff person leading the cluster you can attend.

Lay committee Talk o' the Month

What should Lay Committees be talking about each month? You can find out by exploring the Lay Intern Committee Handbook, online. But we'll also be tipping you each month to some ideas here in this newsletter.

What should you be talking about in September? Introductions, of course! Take some time to get to know each other. Share your stories of faith. Does your intern have a spouse? Make an effort to get to know him or her, too. The one item of business you might want to get to right away, however, is the internship project. It doesn't have to be pinned down right away, but you should be aware of the options, and you may have some good ideas to share with your intern about what that project might be.

Good words from Craig Barnes

If you can scrounge up a copy of the summer issue of Leadership, there is a wonderful column on internship written by M. Craig Barnes on the back page. (The summer issue is not yet available on line, but will be soon.) Barnes, who is both a parish pastor and a professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, ponders how interns who serve under his supervision will be taught and what they learn. He says, in part:

"I have to let the church be the church. Their year with us will be filled with committee meetings that go on forever and accomplish nothing, with junior highers who can’t be cool unless they look bored in youth group, with a legion of phone calls and appointments with people who are unhappy, rushing across town to visit someone in the hospital only to discover that the person was just discharged (you won’t get credit for this one), and the relentless cycle of Sundays that keep demanding another sermon or Sunday school lesson.

"Along the way they will try things that bomb. They will do their best with sermons that still don’t work. They will say things in hospitals that really do not help. And they will be criticized not only for these substantial failures, but for their haircuts and shoes.

"If they are paying attention, they will notice that their supervisor isn’t doing a lot better and is still making some of their same mistakes. But I pray that I will also show them how to fall so very deeply in love with the flock of Christ, who just keep returning to our ministry. They come not in spite of our mistakes but because of them."

News from campus

PLTS: Chris Evans is our new Assistant to the Deans. He is a doctoral student at the GTU and comes to us after working at Resurrection in Oakland as their church secretary. Allison Hines has decided to pursue her Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Cal State East Bay (formerly Cal State Hayward)…We have about 22 new M.Div. students… Lois McGee has returned to work after healing from a broken leg…Thanks to the generosity of Gaymon Bennett and Christin Quissell, the tiled portico outside the Admissions Offices now looks very classy indeed! The newly married couple have edged the area with all the lushly planted earthenware pots that decorated the seminary for their wedding. (They've even covered the plants in deer-proof netting.) And they've set up their own black ironwork patio-table and chairs. So visitors to Admissions now have a really grand spot to rest, discern--and sign up for classes!

Luther: The seminary community is saddened by the unexpected death of Richard Wallace, associate professor of pastoral care. Dr. Wallace died in his home on Tuesday, August 30, of an apparent heart attack. In a communication to the seminary community, President Bliese wrote, "Please remember his wife Beverly and the family in your prayers. Include our whole seminary community in your petitions as we begin to grieve the death of a beloved and cherished colleague, friend, teacher and mentor. Richard had a gentle but direct way to touch people’s hearts and lives. We will miss him."

So how's it with you?

This newsletter should be not just for you but also about you. We’d love to have pictures of interns and supervisors doing strange and wonderful and photogenic things, stories about incredible events and amazing ministries involving Western Mission Cluster interns. Send us your pictures! Send us your stories! Send us your news! Send it all to smckinley001@luthersem.edu. We’ll take it from there!

And last but not least: CLI staff photo

Hey! Here we all are. And ain't we a good lookin' bunch? We took this photo at our first all-CLI staff meeting in June in St. Paul. It was the first time we were assembled altogether in one place, since our posts are spread out across the Western Mission Cluster states.
