Test #3 will consist of two parts.  In part one, you will be asked to write out the complete paradigm of the Qal perfect of the root l$m in both Hebrew and English.  You will need to know all of the suffixes and vowel pointing, including accents, the proper order of the paradigm (third to first person), and the proper translation of each part of the verb. 

                In part two, you will be asked to translate Hebrew sentences into English.  All will be sentences, no phrases.  You will be permitted to use the dictionary in the back of the text book and your vocabulary sheets (no notes).  I will attempt to use words you have already learned plus the negative and interrogatives.  You may, however, wish to review the order of the alphabet so that you can find words in the dictionary more quickly.   The sentences will be similar in difficulty to the sentences that are in the exercises.

 

Test #3 will place emphasis on the following:

 

1. Translating, recognizing, and understanding the constructs

                a. recognize construct suffixes - ta   y"   [tO]  

                b. don't be thrown by changes in spelling

                c. recognize some of the more common, yet difficult to remember constructs,

                                such as some of those listed on pages 59-63.

                d. know what makes a noun definite (has the article, is a proper noun,

                                or has a pronominal suffix)

                e. know when to make a noun in the construct definite

                f. be careful of adjectives, check out their number and gender to make certain

                                that they modify the appropriate noun in a construct chain

 

2. Pronominal suffixes

                a. know them, in both forms that they take.  That is, one form of suffix goes on singular nouns and most prepositions.  A second form of suffix goes on plural nouns and on a few prepositions.  You cannot use a dictionary to look up suffixes, so you must know them.

                b. Recognize an be able to translate properly suffixes on: *inseparable prepositions b and l, *on prepositions k and m, *on direct object marker, *on those prepositions which take the form of suffix which normally go on plural nouns

                c. Recognize suffixes on nouns: *on masculine and feminine nouns, *on plural nouns, *on a few irregular nouns such as father or brother

 

3. The Qal perfect of the verb

                a. be able to translate a perfect verb in a sentence

                b. be careful to watch for the subject of the verb.  With third person verbs (mas., fem., sing., and plur.), the subject might very well be something other than the pronoun.  Look for the subject most often immediately after the verb.

 

4. Extra items to watch for:

                a. recognize and understand the purpose of the sign of the definite direct object marker t") -te)

b. recognize the difference between )ol and  Ol

          c. take special note of the differences in the three suffixes which end with y:

                                yi     y"     ya

          d. pay particular attention to the third masculine singular suffixes:

                                singular  O  (sometimes UhO)  and plural  wyf  

 

5. Recognizing and translating the interrogative Ah (and other Hebrew interrogatives)

 

6. Don't forget some of the things you have already learned:

the hidden presence of the article, the meanings of the inseparable prepositions, the differences between predicative and attributive adjectives, and the use of demonstratives
