3) Awareness of the types of errors that could arise in the text due to the process of copying by hand and the tendencies of scribal practice:
These include accidental or unintentional errors such as:
- Misreading or mishearing the text during the copying process;
- Omission of text when similar endings occur on successive words;
- Rearranging of word order (perhaps in a slip of memory);
- Substituting a word or phrase for another;
- Harmonization of a passage with one that occurs elsewhere (could also be intentional)
And deliberate or intentional changing of the text:
- Grammatical or stylistic corrections;
- Simplifying or smoothing of a difficult passage;
- Modifying for doctrinal or theological reasons
