Type of variant: The "brackets" surrounding the words
kaiV gonupetw'n kaiV in Mark 1:40 indicate that the words enclosed are replaced by other readings.
List alternatives: Find the reference to verse 40 and the same symbol in the apparatus at the bottom. There the alternative readings are given along with the Witnesses for each. Each reading with its witnesses is divided by a dotted vertical line. (When more than one type of variant occurs within a verse as in verse 39 above, the end of data for each is marked by a solid vertical line.)
Alternative 1: The † indicates that the reading that immediately follows was adopted in Nestle-Aland, 25th ed. but has been rejected in this edition.
"1 2" : numbers are used to save space. Number the words in the text above, here 1,2,3, and then read using these numbers.
Accordingly, the first alternative is to read words "1 2" i. e.
kaiV gonupetw'n. This reading is supported by the manuscript
Í (aleph). The * indicates this is the reading in the original copy of this manuscript. The dotted vertical line indicates end of support for this alternative.
Alternative 2: The - (minus sign) indicates complete omission of the words in question. This is the reading in uncial B and minuscule 2427 plus manuscripts of the sahidic version. The p) indicates judgment that this variant is influenced by the parallel in Matt. 8:2.
Alternative 3: As the number "3" shows this reading would have only the
kaiv. This reading is found in uncial manuscripts D, W, G and a few others (pc) and in the majority of Old Latin witnesses (it).
Alternative 4: Reads kaiV gonupetw'n aujtoVn kaiV and is supported by uncial manuscripts A, C, 0130, family 13, minuscule 33 and by the Majority
Ï of the Koine type texts (see Introduction, p. 55), and Latin manuscript q with minor variation.

Í (aleph), and by other uncials L, Q, family 1, and minuscules 565, 579, 892, 1241, 2542 and a few others (pc), and by the Vulgate and Old Latin tradition in part (lat).
