Instructions for Downloading & Installing Greek Fonts

Introductory Note:

In order to view the Greek text correctly in Greek characters on the computer screen, a special set of Greek fonts must be installed on any computer that you are using to do work in the course.
If you are seeing the Greek text in vocabulary lists or quizzes, etc. displayed in strange-looking English characters rather than in Greek or you do not see the accents and breathing marks as in the introductory text, then you have not properly installed the fonts.

Note that simply downloading the fonts does not install them on your computer.
For the PC there is a three step process: 1) downloading, then 2)expanding, and finally, 3)  installing the fonts in Windows on your computer.
For the MAC
, see instructions below.

Instructions for downloading and installing the fonts:

For the PC:

Step 1) Downloading

Click on the link below to download.  When the "File Download" prompt appears, make sure the radio button "Save this program to disk" is checked. Then click OK and make sure to note where on your computer the file with the name "gfonts.exe" is being saved. Download gfonts.exe now.  463792 Bytes

Step 2) Expanding the font file

Once the "gfonts.exe" file is saved, open MS Windows Explorer, go to the directory where you saved the gfonts.exe file and double click on the filename.

This will unpack/expand the fonts included in this compressed file into a set of individual font files that will have the extension *.ttf. Again be sure to note and write down the pathname  of the folder where the files will be "unzipped" (usually on your C: drive in a subdirectory with the name "GFONTS" ).

You will need to know this location in Step 3 below.

Step 3) Installing these expanded *.ttf (font) files on your computer

Once expanded, you then need to use the Windows "Fonts" installer program to "install" these fonts in MS Windows in the same way as you would install any other .ttf (TrueType) fonts so they are accessble to the Windows operating system. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. When the Control Panel opens, double click on the Fonts icon or program name. Once the fonts program opens, click on "File" > "Install New Font." Once the "Add Fonts" prompt opens, make sure that the "Drive" and the "Folders" are set to the location you noted above in step 2. The program will automatically find and "list" any font files in this directory. You should see something like this:

Make sure the "Copy fonts to Fonts folder" box is checked. Click the "Select All" button, and once all the files are selected Click "OK" and the fonts will be installed. Close the Fonts program.

As long as the fonts are installed in Windows they will be available for any program that is running in Windows including your Internet browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and MS Word (or other wordprocessor).

For the MAC: (for MAC OS 10, see below)

Click on the link below to download the appropriate MAC font file to your computer. Once you have downloaded the font file to your computer, simply copy/move the file into the appropriate "Fonts" folder. Download macfonts.hcx now. 112797 Bytes

Note: If you are having trouble downloading the font file you need, you may need to right click on download link and choose "Save Link As". It is essential you use Netscape 4 (or better) or Internet Explorer 4 (or better).

Also, when you click on the link above, a window will appear to "Save As" (Netscape) or in Internet Explorer select the option to "Save File to Location." Save the file to a folder on your hard drive and follow the instructions above.

Downloading Greek fonts to MAC OS 10

(thanks to student Charlotte Schmiedeskamp for sharing these instructions after much hard work)

"The directions for downloading the Greek fonts to MAC OS 10 and 10.1 are different than those for previous MAC OS systems. With OS 10, it is no longer possible to drag the Greek fonts folder into the system fonts folder--the system folder cannot be modified in any way.

In OS 10, the Greek fonts can be installed in this way:
1. Go into MAC hard drive.
2. Open "Home" folder.
3. Open "Library" folder.
4. Open "Fonts" folder. Drag Greek fonts folder to "Fonts" folder.
5. Close all windows. Fonts will work once windows are closed.
No need to shut down/restart system.

This works well, and the Greek fonts will be installed in all 5 of the font folders in the new OS 10 system. Deleting them later is more difficult."
