Page numbering in Word

To add page numbers to your document

  • Click on insert
  • Choose page numbers
  • The Page Numbers box will appear (see picture below).
  • Choose the position and alignment where you want your page number inserted, e.g. bottom or top of page; and center, right or left.
  • Choose whether you want to show the page number on the first page by clicking the box Show number on first page.

 

  • Click on Format and you will get a new box:
  • Choose whether you want continuing numbers throughout the entire document, or starting at a different number, not continuing from the previous section.
  • Click OK when done.
  • Once you choose your page numbering scheme, Word creates a header and a footer for you. (See next section)

Header and Footer

  • From your toolbar, under view, click header and footer.

 

 

  • On your toolbar for the header and footer
    you get the following (see picture below):

  • You can automatically insert page numbers by clicking on this icon
  • To access the Page Setup box, click on this icon. The Page Setup box helps you change the position of the numbers.  It allows you to have a page number inserted in a different position on the second page from the first page
  • To change the position of your number for the second page click the Different first page check box.
