Getting started in Word

To open Microsoft Word

  • On the bottom left corner of your screen click on start  

  • Click programs  

  • Click Word

  • Or, if you have it, you can click on the icon of Word on your desktop.

 


To open a document

  • When you open Word a blank new document will open immediately. You can also go under file, open, then new.

  • Or  you can also click [new] the new documents icon on your toolbar

  • A blank document appears

  • Start typing

To open an existing document

  • You can also open an existing File, then open and choose your file name. Or click on  [open] icon on your toolbar. Click on your file name to open the document.

  • Start typing

Toolbar

The toolbar will have most of the functions you need for  creating and editing documents. Here is an image of your toolbar:

The following icons are important for you to remember

  • Always save your documents. Click the save [save] icon

  • You can cut [cut], copy [copy], and [paste] paste using these icons on your toolbar 

  • To print go under file then print. Or click the print icon

  • To open another document click on file then new and enterOr click on [new]

Formatting

  • Under format you can change font and size, tabs, etc

  • Under tools most useful is the grammar and spell check

  • On your toolbar the italics, underline, and bold button will be helpful to know
