Athens Acropolis

The word acropolis means "upper city" and it refers to the high hill that dominates the city of Athens. It is shown here from the area where the ancient city gate was located. Travelers coming to the city from the nearby port would have seen it from this perspective. The temple of Athena, known as the Parthenon, was the best known structure on the acropolis. Other temples stood nearby, making the acropolis the city's religious and cultural center. Processions held during the Panathenaic festival in ancient times culminated at the acropolis.
