Paul at Ephesus

Acts
19:1-7

Paul worked for over two years at Ephesus. Disciples of John the Baptist accepted Paul's teaching. Some from the synagogue rejected it. Others wrongly thought that ability to heal was magic. At Ephesus Paul wrote 1 & 2 Corinthians.

Context: The account of Paul's work in Ephesus reveals the mixed religious world in which Paul worked. Magic is one of the issues Paul contended with. Acts tells of an exorcist named Sceva and his seven sons, who tried to use the name of Jesus as an incantation. The demons are said to have reacted negatively to this. According to Acts 18:11-20, this led many to burn their magic books.
